Video cameras are everywhere – at intersections, in airports, on factory floors, and in retail stores – tasked with keeping us and our property safe and secure. But the data these cameras capture is only living up to a fraction of its potential. Even though thousands of cameras are placed throughout our cities, shoplifters say they are caught, on average, only once every 48 times they steal.1 In our 10 biggest cities, drivers spend up to 17 hours a year searching for parking spaces.2 Traffic cameras have yet to eliminate pedestrian deaths at intersections, where 128 people were killed in 2016 in New York City alone.3 Traffic jams cost the U.S. economy over $124 billion every year.4 And despite the availability of cameras to monitor queues, Americans spend about 37 billion hours each year waiting in line.5
Well, good news is coming. Thanks to recent technological advances, it’s possible to connect these simple tools into an integrated, intelligent system that can address social challenges in ways never before possible. Combine video with artificial intelligence (AI) and it becomes a rich source of data that delivers deep insights into human behavior, safety, and business operations – insights that can address some of society’s most pressing problems.
