City-wide driverless trains in Denmark
Sharing locally-produced energy using the IoT

Idea

Connect Copenhagen 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with an innovative design - focused transportation system

The Partners

Hitachi and its subsidiary Hitachi Rail STS has joined forces with Copenhagen and Metro company to create a seamless transport system, which fits into the city's current design and infrastructure.

Results

In 2002, Hitachi Rail STS in cooperation with Metroselskabet were contracted to design, manufacture and build an efficient rail network to Copenhagen. The collaboration resulted in a safe, fast and comfortable metro system, which makes it easy for the people of Copenhagen to get from A to B in minutes. The driverless system was introduced by contemporary advanced technology, and it was a leading initiative in the transport sector.

The Future

Based on the success of this project, Hitachi and Hitachi Rail STS launched the next stage – the Cityringen – on September 29, 2019. The line has 16 km of double track and 17 additional stations. Similar to the current network it operates 24 hours a day with 98% service coverage.
