67% of India's population lives in rural areas. Out of this, 7% or nearly 63.4 million people live without access to clean water. That is more than any other country in the world - the combined population of Australia, Sweden, Sri Lanka and Bulgaria. 1

The average annual per capita water availability in 2011 was estimated at 1,545 m3. With a substantial increase in the country's population, the per capita availability may decline to 1,140 m3 by 2025. This is an alarming indication of the widening gap between demand and availability of water that may soon hurtle the nation towards water scarcity.

The changing climate and unpredictable rainfall over the years has rendered a very inequitable distribution of water throughout the country. Innovative, superior IT and OT based innovative solutions are needed that will give communities necessary tools to conserve and optimize distribution and usage of this precious natural resource.
