Marking a milestone in building smart, resilient grids for the future, Hitachi Energy has delivered the ground-breaking Raigarh-Pugalur Ultra-High Voltage Direct Current (UHVDC) Link which can deliver clean electricity generated by wind turbines to more than 80 million people. Powered by Hitachi Energy's state-of-the-art technologies, the bi-directional link will pass through 5 states and transmit 6,000 MW of reliable power over 1,800 kms, between Raigarh in Central India and Pugalur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, thereby helping the Government in taking one step closer to achieving its “Power for All” vision.

Enhancing India’s Green Energy Capabilities

Making Sustainability the core of its energy transformation, India is leaping ahead to become a global clean energy leader, achieving 175 GW renewable energy by 2022 and 450 GW by 20301. The economic powerhouse has pledged to become net-zero by 2070, achieving 500 GW of non-fossil electricity capacity and 50% renewables in the energy mix by 20302. However, the integration of variable & volatile renewable energy in the grid necessitates a flexible and secure power infrastructure that ensures grid security and system reliability.

The path-breaking Raigarh-Pugalur UHVDC Link sets a benchmark in building resilient energy infrastructure, with the flexibility to divert power to any region in Central & Southern India, depending on where & when the electricity is needed the most, all from a single location enabled by digitalization.

The project leverages advanced technologies to achieve:

  1. Grid stability
  2. Maximum safety & security of operations
  3. Exceptionally low power losses of 3-4% which is 50% lesser as compared to conventional transmission systems
  4. 180 MW energy savings, and
  5. Reduction of 646,000 tons of carbon emissions

By boosting renewable energy, Hitachi is thus helping India advance towards its goals of decarbonizing its energy sector and becoming a clean energy leader.
