Digitalizing Indian Railways For Safer and More Efficient Mass Mobility

Transporting approximately 8 billion people and 1.2 billion tons (1) of freight annually, Indian Railways is on an overdrive to modernize its massive operations across the nation to meet the evolving demands of the rising economic and industrial power.

Hitachi Rail India’s commissioning of one of country’s biggest Electronic Interlocking (EI) Systems at one of its busiest hubs, the JUHI yard in Kanpur, is an extraordinary testimony of Hitachi India’s active partnership in the digital transformation of the nation’s transport sector that is enhancing safety and improving Quality of Life of billions of citizens every day.

By expanding the capacity of the JUHI yard from 300 routes to an unprecedented 973 routes Hitachi Rail’s Electronic Interlocking System is demonstrating multifarious outcomes –

  • Amplifying the mobility of the critical North Central Zone, known as the heart of Indian Railways,
  • Accelerating the Railway’s vision of complete electrification by 2030 (2).
  • Higher efficiency and digital optimization of resources, resulting in reduction of the massive carbon footprint of India’s transport sector. This would help the nation rapidly move closer towards achieving the Government’s call to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 (3); consequently, engendering a sustainable India, a sustainable society.
