There are four areas where we are focusing our contribution – economic capital, social capital, environmental capital and knowledge capital.
Our economic commitment to Italy has seen our contribution to Italian GDP grow by 40% between 2015 and 2016, compared to an average 4% growth by others in the sector. This is a result of a 101% increase in investment, while peers in industrials and services reported an average 3% decrease in investment in the market. During the same period, Hitachi revenues grew by 34% compared to the sector average of 2%.
Employment is vital to the future of the Italian economy. In Italy the employment rate for people aged 20-64 is currently 61.3%, the second lowest in Europe.
Hitachi in Italy provides secure employment to an ever-growing number of Italians. The number of Hitachi employees in Italy grew by 31% between 2015 and 2016. Of these employees, 98% have a permanent contract. Consequently, the social multiplier effect means that for each Hitachi employee in Italy, 1.2 additional employees are activated within the entire economy.
We provide our Italian employees with the skills they need to succeed. Our investment in training has resulted in the level of education of Hitachi employees being higher than the Italian average.
Beyond internal training, we are committed to open innovation, sharing our knowledge with Italian universities, research institutes and think tanks.
Our environmental contribution concentrates on maintaining the integrity of the territory and the ecosystem, reducing energy and water consumption and regenerating natural resources.
We are conscious of our direct environmental impact. The consumption of both gas and electricity within our operations, as well as the emission of CO2, is below the average in Italy.
