The World at your Fingertips

With everything that we have to worry about in today’s society – being confident in online security is a big relief.

We all know how convenient and commonplace it has become to use our mobile devices for online banking and paying for items in place of debit or credit cards. However, do we really know the risks attached to having our financial accounts connected to our devices via fingerprint or a facial scanner?

Limitations of fingerprint and facial recognition

  • Expensive hardware: you need a phone with a special scanner or infrared camera
  • Aging: faces change and fingerprints fade over time
  • Security: fingerprints are left behind on everything we touch and can be stolen; masks can imitate faces
  • Trust: a bank or other service provider can only be confident that a particular phone has been authenticated; it can’t be sure who is using the phone. So anyone who registers their fingerprint or face on a phone can have access to the accounts on that phone
  • Flexibility: because fingerprints and faces are registered on a particular phone, if that phone is lost, the accounts cannot be easily accessed from a different phone.

Finger Vein Authentication

How it works

Using a standard camera, common to nearly all smart phones, laptops and tablets, the system can “see” the internal pattern of the veins in your fingers. The scan is sent to the bank or service provider to authenticate.

What are the advantages?

  • Inexpensive hardware: it works on almost any device with a camera – phones, tablets, laptops and desktops
  • Aging: our finger vein pattern do not change with age.
  • Security: fingerprints are left behind on everything we touch and can be stolen; masks can imitate faces
  • Security: because our vein are inside our bodies, the patterns cannot be stolen or copied.
  • Trust: the bank keeps our registered vein pattern so it can be confident of precisely who is accessing the account.
  • Flexibility: because the bank keeps the registered vein pattern, we can securely log into our account from any device.
