A joint bid by Hitachi and Alstom has been chosen to build and maintain the UK’s new High Speed 2 trains.
The 100% electric trains will be the fastest in Europe, reaching speeds of 225 mph (360 km/h) and slashing customer journey times. The fleet will also be one of the world’s most energy efficient, thanks to lightweight design, aerodynamics, regenerative power and efficient traction technology.
The initial 12 year contract will create around 2500 new jobs, including 500 at the Hitachi factory in Newton Aycliffe and Alstom’s in Derby.
