Established in 1994, Hanergy is a multinational clean energy company and the world's largest producer of thin-film solar technology. Through global technical integration and independent innovation, the company serves thousands of residential and industrial customers worldwide providing them with cutting-edge alternative power solutions.

In 2013, Hanergy decided to create and implement a cloud based monitoring system as a value-added service for its residential customers across Europe and beyond. They wanted a sophisticated data and analytics support solution to give the customer a clear picture of their net savings on investment.

In Hitachi ICT, Hanergy found their ideal technology partner who not only fully understood their complex requirements but worked hand-in-hand as a team with them to provide holistic software expertise that went beyond the traditional definition of technical support.

Challenge

Quest for an all round specialist


Without the monitoring system, Hanergy had little to no visibility of their customers' generation and consumption trends, and therefore could not do any performance monitoring or analysis. The company was fast expanding into new markets, such as Europe and the US. As such, it became increasingly challenging for them to manage their global network of customers without a centralized system that could give them a clear picture of their PV systems installed across the globe.


Most PV monitoring systems in the market are pretty basic ones. We were looking for something more sophisticated. Something that provides more data and analytical support…at the right time, and at the right frequency.

Hanergy's key requirement was to create a customized monitoring solution as it offered the prospect of greater control over the data.

The biggest challenge that Hanergy faced was to find the right technology partner who could develop an effective Power Monitoring and analytics solution that helps give their end-customers a clear and comprehensible 'visibility' of the power flow – and the resulting savings. They needed someone who not only had the knowledge, experience and expertise of developing similar systems, but also a sound understanding of the solar energy business. In addition, they wanted the confidence of working with a globally reputed company that could ensure the successful implementation of the system


Typically, what a PV monitoring system does is to tell the customer exactly how much energy he or she has generated. But in the case of Hanergy, they wanted a complete holistic solution, with a 360-degree view that integrates their global PV systems under one unified platform.

Solution

Power visibility sees the light of the day

By virtue of its extensive experience in a wide range of business sectors, coupled with its commitment to adopt and support sustainable development, Hitachi gave Hanergy the confidence that their project would be in good hands. In addition, Hitachi demonstrated great aptitude for understanding and providing innovative solutions for solar industry-specific issues. Following a series of presentations and discussions, Hanergy chose Hitachi ICT as their preferred software partner for the design and implementation of their cloud-based Power Monitoring and analytics solution.


To put it simply, the system automatically captures data from thousands of smart meters installed across the globe and exports it to a centralised location. This way Hanergy can conveniently access and manage all the devices and data, and perform the necessary analytics to make it more meaningful for their end customers.

After an extensive preliminary research exercise that involved detailed interviews with key customers and stakeholders, Hitachi designed and launched the Power Monitoring and analytics solution that enables users to log on from any device for live updates and analytics on their solar power generation.

With the launch of this system, Hanergy's customers, who are the end users of the PV system, are now able to get a clear picture of their power consumption vis-à-vis the actual generation. This helps instil confidence in them that their PV system is operating at optimum efficiency and they are being billed for what they are consuming, and the excess energy generated is being sold back to the power company to offset their electricity bills.


This 'visibility' of power flow is what attracted our customers the most. It's just the sort of confidence they needed to reassure themselves that the money they have spent with us was totally worth the investment!
